Why are you so cold when bed-sharing?

Have you ever searched for help around this question: How do I stop feeling so cold all night when bedsharing with my baby? I know I did! And guess what? I was surprised to find no good solution to my problem.

The only thing that made me feel a bit better was realizing that I wasn't the only one in this situation. Or rather, this is what gave me an idea... But, let's talk a bit about the problem first.

Why do we feel colder at night?

In addition to the temperature being lower once the sun is set, did you know that it's actually natural for our bodies to feel colder at night? The body heat drops as a lower body temperature to help prepare for sleep. This should help our bodies get a better sleep until going back to our day temperature once we sense that night-time is over.

Without being necessarily aware of this, we all instinctively solve this by sleeping with pyjamas and duvets or covers that let us feel warm and comfortable all night. Isn't there nothing nicer than almost hiding under a duvet or cuddling with your partner when it's a bit chilly in the room? Unfortunately, this is no longer possible once a little one or little ones have joined the family bed. But of course, that's also great! 💕

What does it mean for bed-sharing?

Indeed, all bed-sharing parents should know about the basic safety recommendations that are essential for keeping infants and babies safe when sleeping in the same bed.

Amongst them is the need to remove all bedding accessories that could present a risk of suffocation, which means that planning a bed for bed-sharing requires removing covers or blankets from the baby's surroundings. You could decide to remove them completely which is the safest option or use them closely following recommendations for safe bed-sharing or co-sleeping.

This means that you no longer have the possibility of feeling warm under your bedding and depending only on what you're wearing. If you could choose whatever makes us feel comfortable, you'd probably go for a very warm and thick pyjama sweater, but here's the thing: a baby, potentially a very tiny one, needs access to your boob! 

Bye, bye, winter pyjamas. Hello, nursing clothing! As a breastfeeding mama, it's essential to dress with a top that enables you to start nursing easily and quickly.

And that's what makes it so complicated to figure out how to not freeze while bedsharing and breastfeeding: all the nursing sleepwear currently on the market is, in my opinion, not very convenient and the ones that are easier to use are too light to solve our temperature problem.

Since there's no good nursing sleepwear available, I know I'd often end up sleeping semi-naked with no top on in order to breastfeed easily. The issue was of course that I'd always be feeling cold all night. Not a great way to rest and enjoy the short periods of sleep that a bedsharing breastfeeding baby allows for! 😴
